I am a peace worker from Ankara, Turkey. I began my career in journalism and in 2013 I covered the Gezi Park Movement as a freelance journalist in alternative media and international press. I was a Master-student in Peace and Conflict Studies Hacettepe University's Istanbul branch from 2014 to 2017, where I was taught among others by Johan Galtung, Jorgen Johansen, Stellan Vinthagen, Oliver Richmond, Norman Finkelstein, Joshua Weiss, Wolfgang Dietrich, Gal Harmat, Kai Frithjof Brand-Jacobsen, Zeki Ergas, Tatsushi Arai and Amr Khairy Abdalla. Hacettepe University shut down the department in 2015 but I obtained a Master's degree with my thesis subject being 'Identity-based Conflicts in between Resistance Groups during the Gezi Movement'.Since graduating from Hacettepe University in 2017, I was able to gain experience, inspire activities and realize projects. As a trained peace-worker, I was invited to presented new ideas at international conferences and realize interventions on the level of established organizations as well as in inter-personal or inter-group conflicts.My works focus on the micro-level changes for new social structures.
Burcu Eke-Schneider was born in Ankara, Türkiye. After completing her Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, she worked (from 2007 to 2012) as an Editorial Assistant and then as a Freelance Journalist in the editorial offices of "Counterview" and "You have the floor" at the Turkish news channel Habertürk and Newspaper Habertürk. She later worked closely with representatives of the International Press. Due to the increasingly difficult situation for the media in her home country, she trained as a Turkish Tourist Guide (specializing in the city of Istanbul and the architect Sinan). The unrest surrounding the occupation of Istanbul's Gezi Park was a turning point for Burcu Eke-Schneider, as she completed a Master's Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies with a number of the world’s renowned professors.


In all my works I seek to apply the idea of proceeding from Science to Practice. As an example, I developed and applied “A micro-level Peace-building Method for Sustainable and Just Cities." In this context I initiated the "Creating Peace Gardens in the Urban Realm" project.https://wiki.urban-arena.eu/Urban_Gardening_Peace_Project As a pilot study it has been realized in Wuppertal in order to generate an in-depth, multi-faceted understanding of a complex issue in a real-life laboratory context. It was not only set up to analyse root-cause problems but also sought to propose culturally sensitive solutions by the help of eco-education. The goal was to use "nature-based micro-level solutions" as a "new forms of dialogue method" for a sustainable future. It resulted in an alternative education model:'out of school' for intercultural and interreligious dialogue.I am an UrbanA Fellow and Tag des Guten Lebens Advisory Board member in Wuppertal.
Burcu Eke-Schneider has been working in Germany for Transformative Peacebuilding since 2017 (see www.urban-peace.org for additional background on her).  Here, the Peace Garden idea was born.  And evolved into an empirical study for Transformative Peace Science (through Peacebuilding), with science-to-practice implementation.  Eventually, it becoming a symbol for sustainable and just transformation.

All of these peace efforts provided a transformative model for how communities can overcome systematic challenges through localized efforts and building bridges in between natural science and social science...which could resonate globally.
 
With her prior knowledge, experience and background from the Global South, now combined with the collective knowledge in the West, she has significantly contributed to the intellectual movements in the field of Peace.During her time in Europe, Eke-Schneider has been a pioneer in transformative peacebuilding methods, benefitting transformers, change-makers, and others involved in the field.
