The UrbanA wiki is a tool for knowledge co-creation. Users are requested to create a user page to make their participation in this community and relationship to their other work more visible, and invited to comment on and/or edit existing pages, and create new ones.

Setting up your account

In order to leave comments and make or edit pages you will need a user account. This will be set up in your real name and allow users of the site to identify you and recognise your contributions.

Contact Tom.henfrey to request an account. If you are not already connected with the UrbanA project as a Fellow or Arena participant, please say a bit about yourself and why you are interested in contributing.

Creating your user profile

Every registered account user has a User Page associated with it. Once your account is set up, please visit your User Page and create a profile there. Give a brief introduction to yourself and your work, and your connection with the UrbanA project, and link to any personal or professional websites or online profiles you want to share.

Other users might leave messages for you on your User Talk Page. You will receive a message from the system notifying you of any new messages when you log in.

Commenting on existing wiki pages

Every wiki page has an associated talk page, which can be used for discussion and communicating with other users. Talk pages can be accessed by clicking the "Discussion" tab at the top of the page. Simply edit the page as normal to add your comment. As with any wiki page, you can edit it, link to it, and view the editing history.

In order to keep the discussion structured, we suggest everyone to follow some simple editing conventions:

  • Always sign your name after your comments. Use the four tildes ~~~~ wiki syntax (or the signature button Signature button in the toolbar above the editing textbox). For more information see this help page.
  • Start a new discussion with a == Level 2 Heading == at the bottom of the page (or use the "+" tab).
  • Indent replies with stars (*) at the beginning of the line. Multiple stars increase the level of indentation (useful if you are replying to a reply!)

Find out more on how to use the talk page in this help page.

Editing existing wiki pages

If you see how any existing page can be improved with additional information, or edits to what is already there, you are invited to make changes by opening the Edit tab near the top of the page.

There are no strict rules regarding direct editing of pages. However, we trust you to respect the efforts made by the previous authors and build upon the work that has been done. In case you have doubts about what to insert where, you could contact the curator of the wiki page by adding a comment to the Talk page (see the previous section), or send them a message on their User Talk page (see 'Creating your user profile' above).

Wiki formatting is quite simple when you get used to it, but not always intuitive. Fortunately there are several good sources of online help. The brief summaries below include links to the most important of these.

  • It is relatively easy to edit wiki pages. Click the "Edit" page tab at the top of the page. Make changes to the text. Click the "Save page" button.
  • You can format your text using wiki markup. This consists of normal characters like asterisks, apostrophes or equal signs which have a special function in the wiki, sometimes depending on their position.
  • You can link to pages both within the wiki and on other websites.
  • Images help make a wiki page attractive and evocative. You or another user must usually upload an image before you can use it on a page, or you can directly embed images already on other websites in your wiki pages.

Creating new wiki pages

The easiest way to start a new wiki page is to create an internal link in another page. You can also search for the title of the page you want to create, or enter its name directly as a URL in your web browser (https://wiki.urban-arena.eu/index.php?title=YOURPAGE). We find it works best if the words in page titles are not capitalised, except the first word and any proper names.

Please do check there is not already a page on that topic, and consider setting up redirects from any other titles users might use to find your page. You can also link to your new page by editing other, related pages already on the wiki.

When creating a new wiki page we would like to encourage you to use the templates for either approaches or projects and initiatives. More information on the different categories in the templates can be found here.
