Governance and participation processes range from self-organisation to co-creation in which new actors are brought to the fore as citizens organise themselves and local knowledge is recognised alongside technocratic expertise.
Self-organisation is an “actor-centred approach emphasising local knowledge, communication and survival strategies instead of technical expertise as the main forces driving urban development”. Citizens’ experiences and perspectives are fundamental to urban governance and planning.
