{{Construction}}

Over the next decades, how can we grow & eat food that is healthy, planet-proof and just? Sustainable food practitioners and food systems scholars face tough dilemmas: do we spare nature with intensive food production in designated areas, or do we share the benefits and duties of food production through local food chains? While we are worried about the desertification of arable land, how do we also keep fighting the food deserts forming in our towns and cities? And why is attention to future food systems often so focused on the middle class and the Northern Hemisphere?

==Introduction==
These were the questions we discussed during our interactive online event on food justice, which began with presentations from two researchers in the field of food futures: Professor Julian Agyeman and Aniek Hebinck. The two laid out the challenges underlying the current food system, upon which Professor Julian Agyeman built to stress the vital importance of bringing in questions of racism in the food system, with notable North American examples. To enable the active and democratic participation of the 55 participants, we employed a ‘chat storm’ facilitation strategy in which participants effectively self-facilitate the discussion; In this format, participants nominate the questions they would like to have discussed by the speakers. This way, participants decide what issues are talked about and what direction the conversation takes.

==Highlights from the conversation==
===#1 We cannot separate hunger from racist urban planning===
Redlined districts in the United States—zones marked as unsuited for investment by city planners, often demarcating areas with large proportions of marginalised population groups—are also among the most food impoverished and food insecure; they are areas where food deserts—areas lacking adequate access to nutritious food—are most common. Hence, food justice can only be achieved by acknowledging and tackling the oppressive legacies of urban planning. But where planning policies have largely contributed to this problem, they can now also hold the key to bettering the situation. That is if politicians dare to be bold enough to commit to their constituencies’ right to food, as in the case of Boston under Mayor Michelle Wu.

===#2 ‘Local’ food is a matter of interpretation===
The Alternative Food Movement advocates for the production and consumption of ‘local food’ as a way to reconnect with the sustainability of food production. However, local food means different things to different people; It’s the heirloom seeds brought with migration, Maryland farmers growing “African crops” for Washington DC diplomats and staff. It’s the supply of multicultural foods at local ‘Asian’ markets. Reducing the narrative to a narrow interpretation of localism fails to acknowledge the translocal nature of the wants and needs of the people embedded in food systems.

===#3 The future of food is still under construction===
The current food system has its flaws including harmful impacts on climate change and social justice. In the acknowledgement of these problems, different stakeholders envision different solutions to tackle them. Yet not all solutions manage to address all flaws and shortcomings—they are no silver bullets. Neither, however, do they represent silver-bullet solutions; In the plurality of approaches to a more just and sustainable future food system lies the opportunity to rebuild it and revise it from the ground up. It’s important to envision what a just future food system would look like to devise pathways for the food systems’ overhaul.
== How to add a page to the translocal network database ==

This page contains information about how to easily create a new page for the [[:Category:Translocal networks for just sustainability transitions|Translocal networks for just sustainability transitions]] database by [[Form:Translocal Networks Wikithon|filling in this form]]. Before editing the Wiki you need to either create your own account or use a guest account. After having created your account, you can create a Wiki page for a network either as you best see fit, or by using the Wikithon form and by following the steps below.

1. First you should go to the Wikithon Form, which you can do either by clicking [[Form:Translocal Networks Wikithon|here]], or on the ''Wikithon Form'' link, which you can find on the panel on the left side of the MediaWiki page.

2. Now you should be forwarded to a page that says ''Form:Translocal Networks Wikithon'' (see image below). Enter here the name of the network you want to add and click ''Create or edit''. Preferably capitalize only the first letter of the network's name.

'''[[Form: Translocal Networks Wikithon|>>> Wikithon Form <<<]]'''

[[File:Wikithon tutorial image1.PNG|1773x112px]]

3. This will lead you to the ''Create Translocal Networks Wikithon:[name of network]'' view (see image below).

[[File:Wikithon tutorial2.PNG|650x217px]]

4. Here you can add the information about the network by filling it in the sections provided by the form. You may add the text eg. by copy/pasting it from the network's web page. Find descriptions of the different sections on the bottom end of this page.

5. After you have added the information about the network to the sections, you should click on ''Save page''. In the ''Summary'' text box you can write for example ''Added a page for a translocal network'', but this isn't mandatory.

6. Now you have successfully created a page for a ''translocal network''! If you still wish to do changes to the page, you can click on the ''Edit with form'' link on the upper panel. Now, you can edit the page. Once you are finished editing, you can click on ''Save changes''.

7. Thank you for contributing to the ''translocal network database''! Now just go for it and create as many pages for ''translocal networks'' as you want by following these steps!

=== Descriptions of the sections for the network entries ===
'''Description of what the network is about''': Briefly describe the network.

'''Societal problem they want to address''': What is the perceived issue (problem, challenge) in society that the network wants to address?

'''Societal domain''': Which societal domain/ topic does the network's activities relate to? (eg. food, mobility, housing etc.)

'''Basic aim of network''': What is the aim of the network?

'''Contribution''': What is the contribution of the network to current society (the specific fields they focus on; e.g. helping places to establish a cross-sector food partnership; or providing free of charge counseling for self-organized housing initiatives)?

'''For more information''': Add here the website of the network as well as any references to academic or other articles.

'''Research question about translocal networking''': Please share here the research question(s) and research topics that in your opinion would be relevant for research to take up to gain deeper insights on the topic of translocal networks as they relate to justice and/or sustainability in cities or just sustainability transitions more broadly.

'''Entry done by''': Who has entered this information?

Welcome, to the '''Wiki on Sustainable Just Cities'''!

This Wiki is an ongoing, open-ended collaborative database and knowledge source for city-makers including activists, policy workers, and scientists. It is not only for everyone to use the knowledge here, but also to share their own knowledge and experience with others. The idea of a knowledge commons is that it is owned and governed by all of those who use it.
[[File:JUSTRA Cities network.jpg|thumb|[https://www.eur.nl/en/research/research-programme/vcc-projects-page/justra-cities-network About the JUSTRA Cities Network]]]
The Wiki on Sustainable Just Cities was conceived under the assumption that actionable knowledge is needed to transform our cities into more sustainable and just environments. This knowledge is to be both relevant and accessible to as many people as possible.

The Wiki is organized as a knowledge commons based approach for its greater potential to promote sustainability and justice. Knowledge commons are shared information resources, governed by a community of users according to an agreed set of rules, conventions and procedures. Such a decentralized approach to knowledge co-creation and information sharing uses the ‘wisdom of the crowd’ to support inclusive, co-creative, open-access and open-source approaches to knowledge generation. In order to transform our cities into more sustainable and just environments, we need actionable knowledge that is relevant and accessible to as many people as possible.

The [[UrbanA]] (Urban Arenas for Sustainable and Just Cities) project, an EU Horizon 2020 project, aimed to further develop and translate knowledge into action through the Wiki on Sustainable Just Cities. With the [[UrbanA|UrbanA project]] having ended in March 2022, the [[Vital Cities and Citizens|Just Sustainability Transitions in Cities Network of the Vital Cities and Citizens initiative of the Erasmus University Rotterdam]] has taken over the curation of the wiki, in partnership with [[ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability)|ICLEI Europe]].

The '''UrbanA (Urban Arenas for Sustainable and Just Cities)''' project's aim was to consolidate and communicate the knowledge and experience related to urban social '''(in)equality and ecological (un)sustainability''' as well as on understanding the '''connections, tensions and contradictions''' between the two. The UrbanA project then synthesized these learnings into the Wiki on Sustainable Just Cities.

Further information on UrbanA, a major EU-funded project on urban sustainability and justice, can be found on the project's page and [http://www.urban-arena.eu public website].

{{#default_form:Translocal Networks Wikithon}}

== Introduction ==

This database consists of entries about different ''translocal networks'' that aim to contribute to just sustainability transitions. These initiatives or ''networks'' can take different forms – community organisations, citizen groups, social enterprises or public-community partnerships. They often focus on specific themes or topics, such as food, energy, or housing, but also participatory governance, alternative economic trends or specific social groups. The term ''translocal network'' points to the connections these initiatives have that transcend the geographical and sectoral position of their ''localities''. The ''networks'' on this database thus may have connections across and between cities, urban and rural places, and different levels of governance and action. This process of ''networking'' allows for connecting with and learning from like-minded people and organizations across localities, as well as for increasing their impact in the supra-local contexts they are embedded in.

=== Why a database of translocal networks? ===

Just sustainability transitions are systemic, societal processes that are not confined to any single city or any specific domain. This is why we find it to be crucial to support the process of networking, which may serve to increase the impact of initiatives on transitions locally and transnationally. The purpose of this database of translocal networks in short is to inform, connect and to serve as a platform for knowledge-sharing about and between networks working on just sustainability transitions. For the networks themselves, this database enables the access to and the sharing of information about like-minded initiatives. This sharing of knowledge can serve as a basis for collaboration as well as a source of inspiration. The information shared in this database can enable initiatives to learn from others in order to improve their own processes of network formation. The database may also help in raising awareness about initiatives, which in turn can help promote their growth and impact.

In addition, the objective of the database is to serve as a source for research on and knowledge production about the role of networks in and for just sustainability transitions. This may include information on the networks' various ways of operating to enact change, their differing forms of knowledge governance, and their differing levels of intent in contributing to just and sustainable transitions.

=== Call for co-creation ===

This database of translocal networks will serve its purpose of informing, connecting as well as being a source for learning and knowledge production to the extent that it features a broad range of networks with a necessary depth of information. This is why we invite you, the makers and thinkers around just sustainability transitions across places and spaces, to take part in co-producing and member-checking the knowledge in this database. This database is created and owned by us, the users of this database, and therefore, the more input we put into it the more useful and insightful this database will be. We welcome you to join us in adding your entries of translocal networks to this database in order for us to collectively reap the benefits of this platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

This database has been initiated by the Just Sustainability Transitions in Cities research network of Erasmus University Rotterdam in Autumn 2022. Thus, we are still in the process of creating entries to this database and the work will continue throughout the academic year. In addition to this database of translocal networks, our team is working on a more comprehensive database on Google Sheets, which will serve to provide more in-depth information about networks for research purposes, and which we will make available upon request.

=== How to add a network to the database? ===

Adding a translocal network to the database is easy! Follow this step-by-step guide in order to create your own page(s): [[Instructions for creating a page for the translocal network database]].

Below you will find an overview of translocal networks that have been added to the database thus far.

== How to add a page to the translocal network database ==

This page contains information about how to easily create a new page for the [[Translocal networks for just sustainability transitions]] database by [[Form:Translocal Networks Wikithon|filling in this form]].

== How to add a page to the translocal network database ==

This page contains information about how to easily create a new page for the [[Translocal networks for just sustainability transitions]] database by [[Form:Translocal Networks Wikithon|filling in this form]].

'''Entry done by''': Who has entered this information?

This page contains information about how to easily create a new page for the [[Translocal networks for just sustainability transitions]] database by [[Form:Translocal Networks Wikithon|filling in this form]]. Before editing the Wiki you need to either create your own account or use a guest account. After having created your account, you can create a Wiki page for a network either as you best see fit, or by using templates and by following the steps below.

1. First write the name of your chosen network on the ''Search Urban Arena Wiki'' bar on the upper right corner of the Wiki.

2.Then click the link where it says ''Create the page [name of network] on this Wiki!''

3. This will lead you to the ''Create source'' view. Here you can add the template for a Wiki page by copy/pasting on the ''Create Source'' text page the following code:
<!--T:7--> <nowiki>{{WikithonTemplate}}</nowiki>

4. After you have pasted these templates to the text area, click on ''Save changes''.

5. Now you can easily add the information of your chosen network to the Wiki page you have created by clicking on ''Edit'' on the upper right panel, or go to whatever section you want to edit, and click ''Edit'' on that section.

6. Once you have clicked ''Edit'' you can add text to any of the sections that you added by pasting the templates.

7. For the last one called ''The name of contributor to this entry'' you need to first add '''two empty rows below the heading''', and now you can add your name without any trouble!

8. Later, the administrators of this Wiki will add the page you have created to overview found in the database.

9. Now just go for it and create as many pages for ''translocal networks'' as you want using this formula!

== Introduction ==

=== Call for co-creation ===

Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization, founded in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us. Slow Food believes food is tied to many other aspects of life, including culture, politics, agriculture and the environment. Through our food choices we can collectively influence how food is cultivated, produced and distributed, and change the world as a result.
{{Wikithon2}}
Slow Food envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet.

Their approach is based on a concept of food that is defined by three interconnected principles: good, clean and fair.

GOOD: quality, flavorsome and healthy food

CLEAN: production that does not harm the environment

FAIR: accessible prices for consumers and fair conditions and pay for producers

* Living Labs (LLs) are open innovation ecosystems in real-life environments using iterative feedback processes throughout a lifecycle approach of an innovation to create sustainable impact.

* They focus on co-creation, rapid prototyping & testing and scaling-up innovations & businesses, providing (different types of) joint-value to the involved stakeholders.

* In this context, living labs operate as intermediaries/orchestrators among citizens, research organisations, companies and government agencies/levels.

* Within a wide variety of living labs, they all have common characteristics, but multiple different implementations.<br />

== Introduction ==

=== Call for co-creation ===

This Wiki on Sustainable Just Cities is part of a knowledge commons that serves as a resource for everyone who wants to contribute to more sustainable and just cities. It is not only for everyone to use the knowledge here, but also to share their own knowledge and experience with others. The idea of a knowledge commons is that it is owned and governed by all of those who use it.
==About the Wiki==

== How to add a page to the translocal network database ==

This page contains information about how to easily create a new page for the [[Translocal networks for just sustainability transitions]] database.

<!--T:7--> <nowiki>{{WikithonTemplate}}</nowiki>

== Descriptions of the sections for the network entries ==

'''Description of what the network is about:''' Briefly describe the network.

'''Societal problem they want to address:''' What is the perceived issue (problem, challenge) in society that the network wants to address?

'''Societal domain:''' Which societal domain/ topic does the network's activities relate to?

'''Basic aim of network:''' What is the aim of the network?

'''Contribution:''' What is the contribution of the network to current society (the specific fields they focus on)?

'''For more information see:''' Add here the website of the network as well as any references to academic or other articles.
